FOR
COMPOSERS
COMPOSITION STUDIO CLASSES
Composers can choose to present their works/sketches in composition studio classes. These are low-pressure ways to gain insight and criticism on your work from your peers--not your professors. Works that have previously been presented range from film scoring projects, to large orchestral works, to piano solos, to an ep of trance music. Studio classes occur semi-regularly and are only held when sufficient interest is present.
GUEST COMPOSERS
Lectures are held occasionally by visiting composers. Notable examples in recent years include Augusta Read Thomas, Amy Williams, Colin Labadie, Eric Whitacre, Erik Santos, David Maslanka, Abbie Betinis, Matthew Peterson, Larry Groupe, Paul Cantrell, Egemen Kesikli, and others.
PERFORMANCE/NETWORKING
Musika Nova, being a community concerned with the proliferation of works by living composers, encourages the pairing of performers with composers at St. Olaf. It is often difficult to find performers as a first-year student or if you are not a member of an ensemble. Musika Nova is a great opportunity to meet and form bonds with people who are mutually interested in what new music has to offer.
